Mosaic bench, a collaborative project between Woodroffe school and ‘Lyme Youth Matters’, the Lyme Regis youth forum.

The main aim was to produce a lasting functional work of art for the newly designed Langmoor gardens that could be enjoyed by the local community and visitors to Lyme alike.

Lyme Youth Matters have been responsible for fundraising and have been supported financially in this project with grants from Lyme’s Town Council, West Dorset District Council, the Carnival Committee,  The Heritage Coast Building Company.  and West Dorset Youthbank

The basic structure of the bench was built by the Heritage Coast Building Company, using blocks carved to echo the shape of the Cobb and harbour.

Years 8 and 9 students from Woodroffe were involved in a competition to come up with designs for the bench.

Lyme youth matters judged the entries and winners saw their designs transformed into mosaics.

The mosaics were put on the bench during the school holiday from 12th –14th April.

A core group of young people spent Saturday, smashing the tiles, drawing the design on to the bench before starting to cement the tile pieces onto the bench.

A key part of this project was to involve people in the community and we organised a drop in day on Sunday 13th April, where anyone could come along and try their hand at mosaicing, under supervision from the youth forum.

By the end of Sunday the mosaic was finished!!

Reaction from the public has been great with lots of  interest.
