Rough Notes – December 2023

Welcome to the last edition of Rough Notes for 2023, where has the time gone? Thank you for reading our monthly publication, don’t forget to look out for them in the New Year.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many contributors to Rough Notes throughout 2023. The students and staff have provided a huge range of content from music performances to Lego, surfing to gardening club, maths challenge to sporting success and from beach profiles to creative writing and theatre trips, to mention but a few. The staff and students are the heart and soul of any excellent school. Our staff and students are brilliant, and they give us so many positives to celebrate, write about and share, I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading about their journey through 2023 and beyond.

I would like to congratulate the following students who were all awarded a Headteacher’s Commendation this term. Congratulations to you all, you should be very proud:

  • Lucy Coddington, Ned Cadwell, Carys Pritchard, Harvey Cleary, Alec Slade, Debbie Woodward, Dylan Airey
  • Evie Johnson, Elodie Hide, Jacob Breens, Sophie Howard, Zola Short, Freddie O'Dwyer, Daisy Weldin, Tom Rogers

Despite this being a short December in school, yet again, our students have been extremely busy. On Thursday the 14th of December we held our annual Carol Concert at St. Michael’s Church in Lyme Regis. The concert was fantastic, and it was lovely to see you there, joining in with the classic carols. This event really helps set the tone for the Christmas period, a lovely community event for all to enjoy.

Our head and deputy prefects supported my delivery of the Christmas Assembly where we looked at the Christmas story and how people celebrated the festive period around the world. We took a moment to consider those affected by conflict and finished with the message that caring for others, time, and company is an important part of the Christmas celebration period. The prefects concluded the assembly by reading a poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson.

Our year 9 History students enjoyed a visit to Bovington Tank Museum where they learned about the realities of armed conflict during WWII. The Tank Museum does fantastic work and helps to bring history to life, we are grateful for their continued support in further enhancing our curriculum. Some interesting artefacts were purchased from the gift shop on the way out too!

Year 7 students enjoyed their visit to the traditional panto, oh no they didn’t I hear you cry but, they really did have a fantastic day out. I think the staff secretly enjoyed the trip to the theatre too.

Our sports teams have continued to play competitive fixtures against schools both near and far, and they have been successful too. Recent fixtures have included rugby, football, netball, basketball, cross-country and the hugely well attended, inter-tutor competition. I enjoyed taking our girls to their first tournament over at Colyton, it was great to see the teamwork, enjoyment and smiles. This is what makes it all worthwhile.

Scarlett and Oscar travelled to Stoke-on-Trent to compete in the Pat Wade Classic (gymnastics) with Scarlett and her partners coming 10th whilst Oscar and his partner came away with Gold. Congratulations to them both.

On Saturday the 2nd of December the Woodroffe running club took part in the Seaton Parkrun. Congratulations to all those who took part.

On average, around 600 hours of extra-curricular physical activity has been completed weekly across this term, a fantastic effort by the students. My thanks to the PE department for providing the many opportunities on offer, you have certainly gone the extra mile.

Our outreach work has continued with local primary schools. Our year 9 students have delivered a science programme based around ‘Women in Science’, supported by the Ogden Trust. We are also delighted to be able to continue the work we have been doing in local primary schools around physical education. This project has now been running for three years and we hope to be able to continue this link moving forward.

Over the Christmas break, we are supporting local families with food vouchers and Christmas hamper deliveries. We recognise that the current financial situation is tough and that Christmas can bring added pressure to families. Please speak to us if you would like us to look at providing support for you over Christmas. I would like to extend my thanks to Sue Davies at LymeForward for their continued support of our Christmas Hamper project (now in its 4th year), it is very much appreciated.
